# How to use the editor?

**Important**

Initially, our new editor is available **in the wiki and for posts**. Step by step it will then be rolled out to many more areas across ChurchTools—making it even easier and more consistent to edit your content.

ChurchTools provides an editor for editing text. You can use it to write, structure, and format text. For example, you can insert headings, lists, links, tables, images, and mentions. It uses the **Markdown syntax**.

**Note**

The term **"Markdown"** refers to a simple notation for formatting. You can select different formatting options not only from a menu, but also by typing specific character combinations directly into your text. For example, “1.” to start a new numbered list.
Of course, you can also use the editor without knowing these notations. You don’t need any Markdown knowledge to do so.

## What features does the editor offer?

Depending on where you are in ChurchTools—whether on the web or in the app—the editor offers a customized set of features. For example, when creating posts, you have three heading levels available, while on wiki pages you can use six heading levels.

You can access many features directly using the buttons in the editor or by typing the forward slash "/". If you'd like, you can also switch to source mode and use Markdown syntax there. For more information on the two available views— **Preview and Source Code** —visit our help page [Editor – What views are available to me?](https://staging.churchtools.academy/en/help/my-churchtools/formatting-and-mentioning-with-the-editor/editor-what-views-are-available/)

You can also access all editor functions using **/ commands**. To do this, click inside the editor and type "`/"`. A drop-down list will open, showing you all the options available in the menus.

The **header** offers you the following options:

**Tip**

If you regularly create content in ChurchTools, it might be worth taking some time to explore our editor and try out its various features and elements. It offers a wide range of practical and creative options for, for example, designing wiki pages that are both appealing and informative.

## Tips for Organizing Your Content

Well-structured content helps other users find information quickly.

Pay special attention to these points:

- Use **headings** if your text covers multiple topics.
- Use **bullet points** for several short pieces of information.
- Use **numbering** for steps that should be performed in a specific order.
- Use **descriptive anchor text**.
- Use **tables** only for information that is truly easier to understand in tabular form.
- Use **images** strategically and only where they support the content.

**Tip**

Choose **link text** that makes it immediately clear where the link leads. Avoid link text such as "Click here" or "Link"; instead, use specific notes like "Open overview" or "Link to the sign-up page." This makes your text easier to understand and fosters transparency and trust.
