# What is the hierarchy?

In ChurchTools, you can organize your groups hierarchically. This allows you to map your church structures even better by combining groups that belong together in a group hierarchy.

There are super- and subgroups. For example, you can assign various groups to a group and thus create a structure with a superordinate group and several subgroups.
However, you can also use more than two levels and, for example, assign further groups to these subgroups and thus create even more levels in your group hierarchy.

You can find the hierarchy in the *group menu* (1) on the left-hand side. All of the already assigned *supergroups*(2) and *subgroups* (3) are displayed there and you have the option of assigning *further groups* (4).

You can find our detailed instructions for creating a group hierarchy [here](https://staging.churchtools.academy/en/help/churchtools-modules/my-group/how-to-edit-super-or-subgroups-of-my-group/).
We have also put together a few [examples](https://staging.churchtools.academy/en/help/churchtools-modules/organize-groups/networking-groups-with-each-other/) of how you can use the group hierarchy to good effect.
